LAWRENCE — The Center for Russian, East European & Eurasian Studies announces the Ukrainian Studies 2011 Palij Lecture by Ukrainian-Canadian filmmaker Yurij Luhovy and a viewing of his documentary, “Genocide Revealed.” The event will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, in Woodruff Auditorium of the Kansas Union. A question-and-answer session with the film’s director will follow the viewing, which is free and open to the public.
“Genocide Revealed” examines the Soviet government’s efforts to destroy Ukraine as an independent nation. The film focuses on the 1932-33 famine in Soviet Ukraine and the accompanying decimation of the national elite. Based on testimonials of survivors, commentaries by historians, rare stock shots of the period and declassified Soviet archival documents, this 75-minute documentary captures the broad scope of Stalin’s genocidal policies against the Ukrainian people.
Produced, directed and edited by award-winning Montreal filmmaker Yurij Luhovy, member of The Academy of Canadian Film and Television, and narrated by Oscar-nominated actor Graham Greene, “Genocide Revealed” has won 11 international film awards.
